Memories: Yesung x Reader
Genre: fluff ft. crybaby yesung
Word Count: 1k
Note: yâall need to be bracing yourselves for a lot of super junior content bc i have no self controlÂ
When Yesung learned that you had never been to the beachâ well, you did spend less than an hour eating ice cream in the sand over spring break years ago before heading home from your first international trip to Disney World, but apparently that didnât countâ he wasted no time in packing your bags and booking your flight.Â
Yesung had been like this for as long as you had known him: willing to drop anything and everything in the name of seeing the world. Sometimes this habit made your head spin, neck stiffening from whiplash. Once you caught your breath, howeverâ usually after being seated on the flightâ his eagerness to see and experience everywhere without fear of distance or language barriers was what you admired most.Â
Once upon a time, it would have hurt your feelings that Yesung dropped your hand to type on his phone. You would have sighed at his preference to watch the crashing waves through his cameraâs lens when he could have admired them with no electronic barrier like you did. This time, on the beach, it didnât bother you.Â
On your last trip, when Yesung whisked you off to Amsterdam after you made some casual wistful comment like, âI would love to see the tulip festival one day,â you expressed your frustration with his addiction to social media. In hindsight, you could admit that your frustrations were exaggerated by the facts that a.) you were terribly jetlagged, b.) one of your bags (which contained your longtime favorite hoodie) had been lost at the airport, and c.) you had been dreaming of visiting Amsterdam since you were thirteen years old, and Yesung was spending the entire time on his phone while you tried to point out all the things you were excited to see in real life.Â
You should have been more gentle in your tone. Yesungâs feelings could be wounded by the faintest breeze, so you knew that his wince was an authentic reaction to your words.Â
âIâm sorry,â he replied as he set his phone face down on the table. (You had been waiting for the server to return with your meal for ages, which was probably another cause of your irritability.) âI justâ I like taking pictures to share with ELF so much that I forget to enjoy this time with you.â
When he blinked like thatâ like he was on the verge of tearsâ it was easy to forget that he was the older one. He usually embraced your age difference by paying for meals, paying for hotels and flights, paying for everything, giving you everything. He only looked for you to stand by his side, and laugh at his jokes, and hold his hand, and give him loveâ all tasks that came naturally to you.
And when he blinked like that, when he looked so sad when he had been smiling at his phone just moments ago, you felt like you had failed in your half of the relationship.Â
You scrambled to sit by his side, took on of his hands in yours, and traced your fingers along his knuckles, promising, âIâm sorry, Iâm sorry, Iâm sorry,â because although you meant what you saidâ it was annoying when he asked you to repeat yourself again and again because he had been reading something on his phoneâ you never wanted Yesung to be unhappy.Â
âItâs okay. Iâm okay.â He smiled even as he wiped at his eyes. âItâs justâ you surprised me, thatâs all. Youâve neverâ Iâve never upset you before, soââ He hissed a string of curses as he reached up to wipe at his eyes again. âAh, Iâm such a crybaby!â
Afraid of saying something to induce more tears, you tightened your hold around his hand and pressed an apologetic kiss to his cheek before flipping his phone over, expressing interest in the pictures he had taken. Most depicted the tulips, or the clouds overhead, or selfies that his fans would be overjoyed to see on Twitter or Instagram. Some, however, depicted you: you beaming at the flowers, you reading the brochure distributed by the tour guide, you falling asleep in the restaurant booth just minutes before your outburst.Â
When you looked at Yesung, more apologetic than ever after realizing that he was paying attentionâ he was collecting memoriesâ his face was burning scarlet. âDonât worry.â He took his phone and admired the pictures of you. âIâm not going to post these anywhere.âÂ
So, rather than losing your temper when Yesung was glued to his phone on the beach trip, you excitedly tried to peak at the moments he deemed worthy of remembrance.
âStop that,â he whined as you stood on your tiptoes, trying to look over his shoulder. Smiling faintly, he shied away from you. âI canât focus when youâre so close to me!â
You tutted, âStop being weird,â and walked away from Yesung to step carefully into the water. âI wasnât trying to be close to you. I was trying to look at the pictures!â
âWell,â he winked from a safe distance, so you couldnât swipe at him or splash him with water for being a pervert when he said, âjust wait âtil we get to the hotel room.âÂ
All flirtations aside, once the sun set and once he ordered dinner, Yesung sat with you on the hotel bed to swipe through the pictures he had taken throughout your first day on the beach. He offered commentary for each photo such as, âI posted this one on Instagram, and Donghae complimented the lighting!â and âCan you believe this picture of the ocean got 5,000 retweets?â
You replied enthusiastically, âYes! Itâs a beautiful picture!â
Yesung beamed at the praise, so he was smiling before he reached the picture of you taking your experimental steps into the ocean. He was smiling before he confessed, âThis one is my favorite.â
Blushing, you wondered aloud, âDoes it make you sad that this one wonât get compliments from Donghae or 5,000 retweets?âÂ
Yesung quirked his head at you, perhaps wondering where such a question had come from, and swiftly answered, âNo.â His bangs fell into his eyes. âI think thereâs something nice about having things that are just mineâ just ours. Iâm not sad.âÂ
And when his smile grew as he tossed his phone to the foot of the bed and threw his arms around you, you were not sad either.

10 YEARS AGO, SUPER JUNIORâS 'SORRY, SORRY' CHANGED K-POP FOREVER
THE SONG NOT ONLY CATAPULTED SUPER JUNIOR TO STARDOM, BUT IT REVOLUTIONIZED K-POP â AND EVERYONE FROM SEVENTEEN TO NCT HAVE COVERED IT
On any given day, fans of K-pop groups rally on Twitter to get their faves noticed. Whether thatâs trending hashtags to get them onto social media charts or to win actual awards, you canât escape their passionate presence on your timeline. And though social media has always been an integral part of K-pop fandom, it wasnât until a couple of years ago that K-pop stan Twitter became a force to be reckoned with. K-pop groups regularly dominate Billboardâs social chart, and now even brands stan Loona. But in order to get to that place in the digital space, a lot of ground had to be broken, and it can be traced back to exactly 10 years ago.
In terms of Hallyu (Korean pop culture) history, 2009 was an iconic year. Some would even argue it was a more impactful era in terms of K-pop reaching audiences outside of Korea than 2012âs âGangnam Style.â According to an unpublished survey collected by Korea Creative Content Agency USA in 2014, the majority of K-pop fans in the States (39.5 percent) started consuming K-pop earlier than 2009, as opposed to 26.8 percent between 2012 and 2013. PSY might have turned himself into a viral phenomenon, but 2009 was a launch pad for a lot of what K-pop is today.
The year also marked a pivotal time in the internet age, which helped the globalization of Korean music. By 2009, YouTube and social media platforms had already started making K-pop content like music videos and choreography videos more accessible to consumers. This accelerated the spread of information â and dance crazes â to the world. One of the first male acts to set off a dance craze on social media was veteran K-pop group Super Junior with their 2009 mega hit âSorry, Sorry.â
Released first as a digital single and soon followed by an album of the same name and the music video on March 12, "Sorry, Sorry" not only catapulted Super Junior to Hallyu stardom, but it revolutionized K-pop itself.
youtube
Right from the start, the song says what itâs all about: dance. Packed with a repetitive chorus, chant-like hooks, and auto-tuned vocals, âSorry, Sorryâ utilized the pop formula of the day to perfection and delivered an earworm. The album debuted at No. 1 on one of South Koreaâs most important music charts, and the song topped the charts too. It also reached No. 1 in other countries like Taiwan and Thailand, and it landed in the Top 10 in the Philippines. In Taiwan, âSorry, Sorryâ spent 36 consecutive weeks at No. 1. For a lot of older K-pop fans, "Sorry, Sorry" was an entry point, thanks to the countless flash mobs â a very 2009 trend â and dance covers uploaded online from Malaysia to Indonesia to even a prison in the Philippines.
Sorry, Sorry signaled Super Juniorâs coming of age, not only sound-wise, but conceptually. Their sleeker, more sophisticated neutral color palette showed a more mature side to the SM Entertainment group, who made their debut in 2005. They shifted away from the visual kei-inspired concept of previous songs like âDonât Donâ and âUâ â a major trend at the time â and instead embraced an aesthetic that would inspire the next decade of K-pop. The focus on the choreography highlighted Super Juniorâs strengths in numbers, which helped popularize the idea of larger-sized male groups (think ZE:A, SEVENTEEN, and The Boyz). Not to mention, the virality of a point dance had been something representative of girl groups at the time, but after âSorry, Sorry,â male groups like SHINee (âRing Ding Dongâ) and 2PM (âAgain and Againâ) followed suit.
And Super Junior were pioneers in other ways as well. They were the first K-pop group to feature a Chinese national in its ranks, and though he constantly ran into setbacks for being a foreigner and eventually left the group, Hankyung (who now goes by his Chinese name Han Geng) opened doors for all non-Koreans in the idol industry today.
ailblazers in the global music industry by collaborating with Latinx artists Leslie Grace and Play-N-Skillz on the English-Spanish-Korean banger âLo Sientoâ â and with Reik on âOtra Vezâ â becoming the first Korean act to enter Latin Billboard charts twice.
Due to mandatory military enlistments, departures, and other issues, Super Juniorâs lineup has been changing for the better part of a decade. The actâs current active members are Leeteuk (real name Park Jeong-su), Kim Heechul, Yesung (Kim Jong-woon), Shindong (Shin Dong-hee), Eunhyuk (Lee Hyuk-jae), Lee Donghae, Choi Siwon, and Kim Ryeowook. Once Cho Kyuhyun wraps up his service in May, Super Junior will have a fixed lineup active for the first time in 10 years.
Nowadays, "Sorry, Sorry" is almost like a rite of passage for newer groups, with everyone from EXO to SEVENTEEN to NCT, and even BTS, GFRIEND, and TWICE â together with Leeteuk, who's become a favorite on Korean variety shows â covering it. The song is also a frequent pick on competition shows like Produce 101, where all but two members of the winning âSorry, Sorryâ team ended up debuting in the popular temporary group Wanna One.
youtube
To celebrate 10 years of Sorry, Sorry and its lasting impact on K-pop today, letâs take a look at some of the standout tracks that made that album so iconic.
"Sorry, Sorry"
The song that started it all. Whether itâs the catchy melody, the ddan-ddan-ddans, or the continued use of "shawty" and "sorry," good luck getting "Sorry, Sorry" out of your head. And when you pair it with an equally memorable âpoint danceâ of rubbing your hands in an apologetic manner, itâs no surprise that every K-pop stan on YouTube â and in the idol industry â has this song and its choreography on lock.
Produced by SM Entertainmentâs in-house producer Yoo Young-jin (Red Velvetâs âBad Boy,â NCT Uâs âBossâ), Super Junior changed up their sound for this single. After exploring alternative rock, they went for an R&B and funk-infused dance track, a trait that would come to characterize the group for years.
"Itâs You"
youtube
Following up âSorry, Sorryâ with something just as good mustâve been difficult or even impossible to fathom, but Super Junior pulled through. Two months after âSorry, Sorry,â the group dropped the albumâs second single âItâs You.â Written and produced by E-Tribe (Girlsâ Generationâs âGee,â Loonaâs âlove4evaâ), âItâs Youâ is a more mellow approach for a dance and contemporary R&B song than âSorry, Sorry.â It features a clapping beat, a haunting repetition of the phrase âitâs youâ in Korean, and a balanced harmony of the membersâ voices. The track also marked an important era in Super Junior history, since it was the last single to feature all 13 members of the core group in a music video (Hankyung left the group by the end of the year and Kibum went on a permanent hiatus). Upon release, âItâs Youâ reached No. 1 on South Koreaâs then most popular social media platform, Cyworld.
"Itâs You" has been revamped recently and the group â whose members are all well into their 30s â now perform it at their concerts with new lace blindfolds, which they take off mid-chorus and use as a prop. And though it still sounds distinctly 2009, the song has aged beautifully.
"Why I Like You"
youtube
Thereâs always that one song on an album that fans wish was a promotional single but unfortunately isnât. On Sorry, Sorry said track is âWhy I Like You.â Though performed as a b-side together with âSorry, Sorryâ on music shows, it deserved way more attention. Super Junior are the kings of, among many things, the dance-ballad, and âWhy I Like Youâ is their crown jewel within that genre.
"Monster"
youtube
Before EDM took over, laser synths on a pop-R&B hybrid were everything in K-pop. And âMonster,â with its dark, Timbaland-like moody production, perfectly encapsulated the sound of an era. Itâs a major throwback sonically, but âMonsterâ is undoubtedly an underrated deep cut.
"Heartquake (feat. TVXQ!âs U-know Yunho & Micky Yoochun)"
One of the groupâs many sub-units is Super Junior-K.R.Y., which stands for Kyuhyun, Ryeowook, and Yesung, who are the groupâs main vocalists. On Sorry, Sorry, the trio were given their own song that featured their SM labelmates U-know Yunho and Micky Yoochun, then both part of TVXQ! "Heartquake" is a mid-tempo heartbreak ballad with a hip-hop influence thanks to U-know Yunho and Micky Yoochun self-written rap verses.
